About the Department:

Department started in the Academic year 2008-09 with intake of 240 students. Intake is enhanced to 480 students from Academic Year 2014-15. The department of Chemistry constitutes one such centre for of academic excellence in NIT. Since its inception in 2008, the department has been engaged in imparting the highest level and quality of academic education and focused upon addressing key scientific problems, which have gathered unique appreciation and recognition. The department has well qualified and dedicated young lecturers from various disciplines of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. With the help of these young and energetic minds the department is striving hard to create a niche for itself as a domain of teaching. The department has full equipped laboratories. The Department gives importance not only to academic education but also ethical values and personality development of students by practicing a close mentoring system on regular basis. The department strives hard to impart quality education and to keep the students on the competitive edge of the present-day Science.

As an integral part of the institute, the prime focus of H & S Department is to provide a conceptual base in Basic Sciences which form a foundation to the Engineering subjects.  The department is also actively organizing FDPs, extension lectures, Science Fest etc. in addition to the regular teaching schedule to create awareness and zeal in the faculties and students.

Dr. Suman Kumar Burnwal is the Head of the Department and a Professor of Physics. He worked in various positions in reputed Engineering Colleges in Hyderabad, and an alumni of Department of Physics, Osmania University.

The Department of Chemistry endeavors to be a nationally-recognized model for educating and graduating students prepared to compete in and contribute to the ever-changing, technology-centered world of the 21st century.  The department of Science & Humanities, NIT aspires to achieve excellence in teaching and training the young engineering students in the interdisciplinary areas of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics through outcome based quality education. To achieve this vision the department is committed to providing a course of study for undergraduates in the chemical sciences which combines curriculum, opportunities that are high-quality, innovative and intellectually challenging and employ state-of-the-art technologies.

The mission of the Department of Chemistry is to create and maintain programs of excellence in education and public outreach. Our goals are (1) continue to attract, develop and retain renowned faculty, (2) maintain state of the art research and teaching facilities, (3) provide innovative, dedicated classroom instruction at graduate levels, and (4) communicate the excitement of chemistry to the public at large. To help us accomplish these goals we remain dedicated to a core set of values: excellence in teaching, diversity in our students, faculty and staff, and service to the citizens of the world.

In support of our mission the Chemistry Department faculty members strive to:

  • Act as mentors to undergraduates through advising them in study.

About Us:

This department is one of the oldest departments with highly experienced faculty who guide the students to achieve excellence and the faculties were experts in the fields of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The unit has a vision to excel in modern methodologies of teaching and to recognize and nurture the talent in young minds. In addition to teaching, many faculties are pursuing their research in the fields of Chemistry and Mathematics. Our department was established in 2008, and since then we have grown into a strong and vibrant department with eminent faculty vigorously pursuing research. Our students have access to state-of-the-art teaching laboratories and are involved in innovative research projects in our labs. Department is well equipped with sophisticated instruments to carryout experiments for I &II semester of engineering.
