DEPARTMENT OF HUMANITIES & SCIENCES

Introduction of Humanities & Sciences Department:

The Department of Humanities & Sciences was started in the year 2008 with an intake of 240 students. Later in the year 2014, the intake was enhanced to 480. The first year Engineering students are administered by this department.

The Humanities & Sciences (H&S) department is a well-established department consisting of experienced and well qualified faculties, from Central & State Universities, in the areas Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, English and Management. There are total of two PhD holders each in the field of Physics & Mathematics, and three are pursuing Ph. D. from VTU. All the members are well experienced in teaching and are committed to their profession.

The Physics and Chemistry laboratories are well equipped to meet the requirements of the syllabi and are replenished as and when required. Recently, an English & Communication Lab is established to cater the needs of the students. The management has taken this initiative to help, largely, the non-English speakers in the college. There are nine well-furnished and ventilated class rooms in the administrative block exclusively for B.E. I year students.

As an integral part of the institute, the prime focus of H & S Department is to provide a conceptual base in Basic Sciences which form a foundation to the Engineering subjects.
The department is also actively organizing FDPs, extension lectures, Science Fest etc. in addition to the regular teaching schedule to create awareness and zeal in the faculties and students.

Dr. Suman Kumar Burnwal is the Head of the Department and a Professor of Physics. He worked in various positions in reputed Engineering Colleges in Hyderabad, and an alumni of Department of Physics, Osmania University.

Vision

To promote interdisciplinary research by strengthening basic knowledge and foundation concepts in applied sciences.

Mission

To become instrumental in providing a strong base to the engineering disciplines and act as an interface between core areas of engineering and basic sciences.

Facilities in the department:

Engineering Physics Laboratory:

The Engineering Physics Lab of the department was established in the year 2008. The laboratory is fully equipped and meets the requirement of the syllabus prescribed by VTU for B.E. I year students. The laboratory consists of the experiments related to electrical, electronics, mechanics, optics etc. We provide in hand experience to make students understand the various concepts of Physics useful in Engineering, which will also help them in their career endeavors.

Engineering Chemistry Laboratory:

Established in 2008, we are one of the departments in the campus. The mission of the Department of Chemistry at NIT is to make significant contributions to chemistry education, research, and practice. The chemistry department laboratory has a state of the art infrastructure, instrumentation facility and research interest. The laboratory is equipped with standard instruments such as potentiometer, conductometer, pH meter, colorimeter, flame photometer, weighing balance and consumables from standard company such as Merck, Spectrochem, Nice, etc. Graduates are expected to obtain a broad understanding of chemistry and learn to think critically and communicate effectively in oral and written forms.  The rigorous curriculum provides hands-on experiences with modern experimental and instrumentation, preparing students to enter industry or graduate and professional programs.

English Language & Communication Lab:

The English Language & Communication Lab was established in the year 2015. It is the brainchild of the Chairman Dr S.R. Reddy to help the students of NIT, Raichur in improving their communication and soft skills, which will help them during campus recruitment’s. The lab consists of 40 systems with English communication and skill software. Various aptitude and soft skills classes are conducted as part of training and placements of students in association with GLOBARENA and Sixth Sense Solutions, Bengaluru.

Department Library:

There are nearly 100 books of Engineering Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Environmental Science and Constitution of India for the reference of the faculty of the Dept. of Humanities & Sciences & students.
